Plane Geometry (9th-12th)

Description: Through the study of Plane Geometry, students will develop logic and analytical skills. We will be using the ABeka Plane Geometry curriculum. Christian Book Distributors (Christianbook.com) had the best price for the homeschool student kit (#WW576167). It is not required to purchase the course material from this vendor. Weekly homework assignments will be given. A syllabus will be provided.

Christian Heroes Newspaper (6th-8th)

Teacher: Leah Hendershot

Description: This is a year long class.

We will read the first 5 “Christian Heroes: Then and Now” books, discuss them and create a final newspaper (for each) highlighting interesting points and facts. We’ll cover 2-3 books per semester. (Gladys Aylward & Hudson Taylor will be our first two books.)

Heroes covered will be: Corrie ten Boom, Amy Carmichael, Hudson Taylor, Nate Saint, and Gladys Aylward. (Books 1-5 can be purchased as a set at ChristianBook.com or individually. See supply list.)

For each book:

1. Outside of class: Read assigned chapters and take notes on interesting points and facts that were enjoyed.

2. In class: Discuss the chapter and notes. Decide which may be best to include in the final newspaper. Discuss and work on preliminary layout.

3. Final completion: One-page “newspaper” utilizing layout, grammar, historical accuracy and reporting skills.

History 1: French & Indian War thru Revolutionary (3rd-6th)

Description: This class is taught from the Good and Beautiful curriculum and is suitable for multiple grades with grade specific workbook activities. This unit covered the French and Indian War through the Revolutionary War utilizing all different kinds of teaching mediums including lectures, audio stories, workbook activity, games and arts and crafts.

Life on the Oregon Trail (3rd-5th)

Description: Together we will study what life was like for travelers along the Oregon Trail. We will learn about the reasons why/how they endured the journey and the hardships they faced along the way. We will utilize books, crafts, activities, and writing exercises.

Description: This course will include an introduction to Shakespeare’s plays. We’ll read two of his most famous plays and learn about his historical context, his techniques, and his style. Homework will include reading scenes from the plays and reading supplemental materials.

American Sign Language 3 (9th-12th)

Description: American Sign Language 3 is designed to be a language immersion class, meaning there will be little if any voice used. Students will use the textbook A Basic Course in American Sign Language by Tom Humphries, Carol Padden, and Terrence O’Rourke. (This is the same textbook used in ASL2.) Videos and worksheets will enhance learning.

Description: In this class, we will learn musical terms such as steady beat, rhythm and solo. The students will learn about playing classroom instruments and singing. They will also learn about popular styles of music and famous musicians. They will explore how music can demonstrate emotions and get an introduction to many famous composers.

Description: The first half of class, we will be in the classroom with music activities. We’ll sing songs, play instruments, learn basic rhythms, and dance. The second half of class, we will move to the gym and participate in movement activities. This will include games, playing with a parachute, using scooter boards, and working on basic skills such as throwing and kicking a ball. We will play outside on nice days.

Fearless Writing (3rd-4th)

Description: This class is for 3rd and 4th grade students who need help getting their thoughts on paper. The students will learn strategies to write without fear or frustration. Throughout the year the students will complete different writing projects and create books. Homework will include completing any projects that can’t be finished in class. Although this class will touch on grammar, punctuation, and writing structure, these will not be the focus.
