Jr. Literature (1st-2nd)

Teacher: Rashelle Conkling

Class Length: 12 weeks

Description: This class will explore topics of interest to 5 – 7 year olds. We will study art, social studies, language arts, math, and science using material from the “Five in a Row” series for our classes. We will also use this model with other books.

We will read a well-written children’s picture book aloud for 2 weeks, expanding on different subject areas that come up naturally in the story.

As an example, when we read the story How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World, by Marjorie Priceman, we might use the story to learn about the different countries the character travels to in the book and play a geography memory game in the area of social studies; use the story to talk about the use of repetition and humor in writing/language arts; look at the medium used and the use of complementary colors for art; practice measuring dry and liquid ingredients for math; do an experiment to see what happens when salt water is left to evaporate and talk about healthy eating choices for science; and of course eat some homemade apple pie for fun!
