Middle School Drama (6th-8th)

Description: Middle School Drama is a “doing” class. There will be drama games and improv scenes during each class session to give the students more experience on stage. They will review basic acting techniques and stage terminology, and work on some scripted scenes.
There is no textbook, but the students will be expected to take notes and keep all handouts. Returning students are encouraged, and new students will be welcomed.

Intro to Poetry (5th-10th)

Description: Do you like the rhythm & structure of poems? In this class, we will study famous poems, classic poems, & learn to write our own. Each student will put together a portfolio that includes other artists’ poetry that they enjoy as well as poems that they will have authored themselves. We will also recite poetry as a class & discuss why good oration matters. Students will be encouraged to write at their own level so please join us whether you are already a poet or you’re a beginner.

Description: Students learn memory and delivery techniques as they write and present five speeches: self-introductory, narrative, expository, persuasive, and impromptu. Students evaluate recorded speeches in preparation for self-evaluation. Meets the KSDE High School graduation requirement of .5 credit in communication for class of 2028 and beyond. IEW curriculum will be provided.

Description: Fall in love with the basics of embroidery or continue skills obtained in the Spring semester!
New Students: Will begin with a kit and videos that teach popular basic stitches with practice application. We will then apply new skills to simple projects. Finishing stitches at home will be required. Students will need to purchase this specific kit from Amazon (LINK HERE).
Returning Students: Will work on personal projects with guided help. Returning students must bring an active project for each class. I will contact returning students before Fall classes to talk about project needs.

**CLOSED** Essay Writing 101 (8th-12th)
Teacher: Juliana Williams
Description: Join us in breaking down the steps of a classic persuasive essay. Learn how to examine key facts and form your own position, write a thesis statement, and create an outline. We will cover how to grab the reader’s attention with an exordium and how to wrap up the argument with a concluding amplification. This class will explore basic grammar and various ways to dress up your writing. This class is perfect for the student who has little experience with essay writing. Each step will be broken down and grading will be based on very specific criteria learned in class. We will write four essays throughout the semester with weekly homework building up to each essay.
Each class will begin with Balance, Auditory, and Vision exercises (Bal-a-vis-x), used to engage student’s left and right brain through rhythmic ball and bean bag activities. Enjoyable and beneficial at any age.
This class can be used for partial credit towards your student’s English Language Arts credit. Pair with literature assignments, public speaking, or additional writing and grammar to complete the credit. Grades will be given to all students.

Description: Earth Science lab will be a hands on class! We will get our hands dirty studying soil, erosion, rocks, fossils & more. We will make models of clouds, landforms & more. Students who have already taken Earth Science are encouraged to join us to help cement what they have already learned. Students who have not yet studied earth science are encouraged to join us so that when you later read of these topics you have hands on experience to relate! No text book is required, but students will be encouraged to find facts on the next week’s topic in any resource that they have at home.
